EXPERTISE
Profile
I have a PhD in Biological oceanography focusing on phytoplankton ecology and harmful algal blooms from the University of Vigo (Spain). I did my first postdoc at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in the USA studying dinoflagellates cyst and bloom formation. My second postdoc was in the Institut de Ciencies del Mar (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona (Spain) where I gained experience on marine bacteria ecology and high-throughput sequencing techniques. Later, at Uni Research AS in Bergen (Norway) I did research and development related to cultivation of microalgae, optimization of fortified microalgae biomass and upscaling and production of microalgae biomass for industrial and commercial application. At the same time, I was also in charge of the algae collection at the University of Bergen (UiB) for a brief period. At NIVA I work in the aquaculture section where I analyze the taxonomic composition of microalgae samples collected at fish farms and from research projects. I am also involved in circular economy projects related to the use of microalgae/algae for wastewater treatment.
