At NIVA, we have expertise in everything from treatment technology and water quality to circular economy and climate adaptation. We develop and test new solutions to meet the demands of the future, whether it's energy-efficient treatment, reuse of resources or better monitoring of untreated or treated wastewater.

On assignments from government agencies, municipalities and businesses, we work to ensure that wastewater systems are robust, cost-effective and environmentally friendly. We work with both centralized and decentralized solutions, adapted to Norwegian conditions such as cold climate and scattered settlement.

This is what NIVA can provide:

• Analysis and monitoring of wastewater for nutrients, organic content, pollutants/micropollutants, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, pathogenic microorganisms and antimicrobial resistance.
• Advice on wastewater management related to national and international requirements, such as Norway’s revised national goals for water and health with an implementation plan and the EU’s revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.
• Development and testing of new methods for reusing resources in wastewater.
• Development and testing of advanced treatment technologies such as membrane filtration, UV treatment and ozonation. These technologies are important for preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance in wastewater.
• Climate adaptation in the water and wastewater sector.
• Water and wastewater treatment with nature-based solutions, including stormwater management.
• Risk and impact assessments for discharge of wastewater to the aquatic environment, including opportunities for reuse.

Through our research and consulting, NIVA contributes to improving wastewater management and creating solutions for more sustainable water management.
