Oslo fjord

The Oslofjord ecosystem is under excessive pressure. A 2025 status report shows that simultaneous measures across sectors are needed to improve conditions and protect natural values.

At NIVA, we cover all relevant disciplines related to the Oslofjord. We work in the fjord, in the fjord's extensive catchment area and in the rivers and lakes that flow into the fjord. Our expertise ranges widely; from pollutants and ecological status to habitats and social issues. In addition, we have in-depth knowledge of nature restoration, nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based management related to the Oslofjord.

Main challenges for the environmental status of the Oslofjord

One of the Oslofjord's biggest problems is the extensive supply of nutrients. This applies in particular to nitrogen and phosphorus, which come from agriculture, sewage and industry. Over-fertilization can lead to algae blooms and oxygen deficiency in the fjord.

We are seeing a worrying decline in species such as cod and other codfish, as well as important marine plants such as kelp and eelgrass. At the same time, more alien species are spreading, posing an ecological risk to the native species in the Oslofjord.

When it comes to environmental contaminants, the chemical state of the fjord is assessed as “not good” - although there is a positive trend over time.

This is how NIVA can contribute

NIVA plays a key role in monitoring the environmental status of the Oslofjord. Through in-depth research and data collection, we provide analyses that support the authorities in developing solutions.

We lead several major monitoring programs related to the Oslofjord, and we continuously monitor the fjord with our automated FerryBox system. This system provides valuable real-time data on the state of the fjord.

Our experts have in-depth knowledge of how anthropogenic stressors, both individually and collectively, affect the Oslofjord ecosystem. We use advanced models and data tools to predict future challenges, while relying on long time series that document changes in the fjord over time.

Our expertise in and about the Oslofjord

At NIVA, we are proud to be a leader in research and monitoring of the Oslofjord. Our experts have a unique insight into the fjord's ecosystem through decades of research and surveys. This enables us to identify the complex relationships between human activities and environmental impacts. It also allows us to actively contribute to management measures that promote a sustainable future for the Oslofjord.
