PlasticTreaty
The overall goal of the project is to help ensure that the new international treaty to combat plastic pollution is effective and that it takes into account the needs and circumstances of developing countries and economies in transition. Among other things, the project supports an independent coalition of scientists working to ensure that the agreement is based on independent, up-to-date research.
About the project
In March 2022, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) adopted a resolution to develop an interenational legally binding treaty to combat plastic pollution. For the treaty to be effective and fair, it is important that all sectors and countries – including academia, civil society and government representatives from countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific – participate and are consulted in the negotiations to develop the treaty. The treaty is to be finalised by the end of 2024.
The PlasticTreaty project has the following goals:
-
Increased capacity for civil society actors to participate in the negotiating process towards the treaty and to actively engage with national governments in this process.
-
Delegations from Africa, Asia andthe Pacific Islands take leading roles in the negotiations and develop and defend strong positions that reflect their needs and diverse situations.
-
Facilitate the exchange of information with, obtain information from, and possibly influence delegations from countries that are particularly central to preventing plastic pollution.
-
A network of scientific experts, the Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty, has been established and provides knowledge to government delegations and civil society actors throughout the negotiation process.
NIVA leads the project on behalf of the project partners. Through IKHAPP, NIVA also acts as secretariat for the Scientists’ Coalition.
