ØKOFERSK
The purpose of the monitoring program is to provide reference data from unaffected water bodies against which impacts can be assessed, to monitor long-term changes in natural conditions and large-scale human impact, and to monitor acidification effects in freshwater in Norway as a result of atmospheric inputs of long-range transported air pollutants.
About the project
Time span: 2009- (ongoing project). Last contract period: 2021-2025

The program is divided into five sub-programs, where NIVA, together with the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA), conducts ØKOFERSK Central, ØKOFERSK East, and ØKOFERSK Trend.
The monitoring aims to strengthen the data foundation for establishing reference values for various quality elements in typical Norwegian lake types and to test methodologies for ecological status classification of Norwegian lakes.
ØKOFERSK Trend also aims to map the extent of biological and chemical acidification effects in water, the geographical distribution of these effects, and changes over time resulting from variations in inputs and deposition. Additionally, trend monitoring will track large-scale human impacts, such as the effects of climate change, as well as long-term changes in natural conditions. The monitoring includes both physicochemical and biological quality elements.
