Pawel Krzeminski is a senior researcher at NIVA and an environmental engineer with background in Sanitary Engineering (PhD) and Chemical and Process Engineering (MSc). His research focuses on sustainable water management and circularity aspects, with emphasis on resource recovery, water treatment and reuse, and water quality monitoring. He has a particular interest in membrane processes and their applications for environmental protection and for industrial purposes, such as process intensification, product separation, purification and recovery.
With over 15 years of experience across research, academia, consultancy, and industry in Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, and Poland, he brings a multi-sector perspective. His current research spans drinking water, wastewater treatment and reuse, and resource recovery, for both municipal and industrial applications, with a special interest in advanced treatment/recovery methods. Key areas of focus include developing technological solutions for water treatment and reuse, pollution mitigation, and resource recovery.
Technological solutions work focuses on application of membrane separation processes (MBRs, MF, UF, NF, RO), nature-based solutions, testing of treatment technologies, development of lab-scale and pilot-scale custom-made tools and methods in water characterization and treatment. Pollution mitigation research includes studying the occurrence, fate and removal of emerging contaminants during wastewater treatment and reuse, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring and mitigation (e.g., ARB&ARGs quantification and removal in the water cycle), the removal of natural organic matter (NOM) and cyanotoxins in drinking water treatment, and urban water management. In resource recovery, he focused on extracting valuable resources (water, minerals, nutrients, etc.) from waste streams and concentrates, such as desalination brines and end-of-life battery waste; and assessing the quality and reusability of recovered products. He is also actively involved in exploring industrial symbiosis opportunities and sustainable resource management, especially through membrane-based separation processes for resource recovery.
