Frode Sundnes has international and interdisciplinary experience in development and environmental studies, with a PhD from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The doctoral work in political ecology and environmental history was a study of land reform and nature conservation in South Africa.
Sundnes has been involved in a range of projects that thematise inclusive, legitimate, and integrated water and environmental governance in different ways. Of these, a group of projects relate to the use and management of protected areas, cultural landscapes and the outfields in Norway (FOODCOAST, PARKAS, OUTGEN). Sundnes has also taken part in research on the management of the landscapes of wild and semi-domesticated reindeer (Rášša); on the management of kelp and seaweed harvesting (OPTIMAKELP); and on engagement processes with regard to reducing water pollution from agriculture (EU-FAIRWAYS). Sundnes has also co-led a multi-level study of coastal conflicts in Africa (MARICA).
