Summary
OceanObs’19 made recommendations for the way forward to establish a sustainable ocean observing system. The recommendations included cross disciplinary engagement and partnership, stakeholder and societal needs, and improved and shared technology for ocean observing. OceanObs’19 is very timely. The United Nations has dedicated the next decade to achieve sustainable development goal number 14: ‘Conserve and sustainably use the ocean, seas and marine resources for sustainable development’. Ocean research and observing systems are needed to achieve this. Observing platforms used in the ice-free world oceans such as Argo floats, gliders, and autonomous surface vehicles cannot be used in ice covered regions. This was highlighted during OceanObs’19 sessions concerning the use of Argo floats.
