Circulation and particle concentrations in the lower part of the Glomma River outside Borg Harbour
Report
Summary
In the area outside Borg Harbor, i.e. the lower part of the Glomma River and the area outside the estuary, the circulation is affected by the fact that fresh water meets salt water. It is strong seaward flow of freshwater that entrains saline water located just below the fresh water layer. The entrainment causes an upstream compensation current. High river discharge results in a deeper layer of freshwater, but also a more powerful and concentrated compensation current. The tide largely affects the compensation current. On falling tides this current is slowed down, and may in some cases turn. ....
