A hitchhiker's guide to European lake ecological assessment and intercalibration
Summary
The WaterFrameworkDirectiveisthefirstinternationallegislationtorequireEuropeancountriesto establish comparableecologicalassessmentschemesfortheirfreshwaters.Akeyelementinharmonising quality classificationwithinandbetweenEurope’sriverbasinsisan“Intercalibration”exercise,stipulated by theWFD,toensurethatthegoodstatusboundariesinallofthebiologicalassessmentmethodscorre- spond tosimilarlevelsofanthropogenicpressure.Inthisarticle,weprovideacomprehensiveoverview of thisinternationalcomparison,focusingontheassessmentschemesdevelopedforfreshwaterlakes.
