Freshwater benthic algae and heterotrophic growth are surveyed, collected and their coverage estimated in the field. Taxa are microscopically examined and identified in the laboratory based on morphology. Indices are then calculated to assess the ecological status of the surveyed river or stream; to inform about eutrophication, acidification and organic pollution impacts.
