Welcome to the International Research Group on Charophytes
Charophytes, a group of algae, encompass both extant Charales and their direct ancestors (fossil orders Sycidiales and Moellerinales). They are regarded as one of the closest ancestors of land plants.
The International Research Group on Charophytes (IRGC) was established in 1989 during the 1st International Symposium on Extant and Fossil Charophytes held in Montpellier, France. As a non-profit organization, the IRGC aims to facilitate collaboration among charophyte specialists worldwide. Currently, the IRGC boasts approximately 100 members from 30 countries across five continents. The group focuses on the study of both living and fossil charophytes. The group’s research focus spans diverse fields, including evolution, ecology, electrophysiology, phytoremediation, and wetland management.
Purpose and aims
- Promote and coordinate international cooperation on charophyte research: This involves both living and fossil specimens from all geological periods.
- Encourage integration and synthesis: We aim to bring together all aspects of botanical and palaeobotanical studies related to Charophytes sensu Charales.
- Strengthen cooperation with other organizations: We actively seek to cooperate with organizations interested in Phycology and Palaeobotany.
- Provide an international discussion platform: This is achieved through organizing international meetings, distributing an annual newsletter, and engaging with the community via social media channels.
