Profile

Santiago is a Peruvian researcher working at NIVA’s Water and Society section. He holds a MSc in Resource Management and Environmental Studies from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and is currently on the final stages of his PhD work (in Oceans and Fisheries) also at UBC. His research has mostly focused on improving our understanding about the linkages between the biophysical and human subsystems of aquatic ecosystems. He has experience in the design and application of various quantitative and qualitative methods (e.g., integrated economic-ecological fisheries modelling, valuation of ecosystem services, stock assessment, management strategy evaluation, cost-benefit analysis, workshops, focus groups, semi-structured interviews) to characterize and analyze the interacting ecological, economic, social and cultural components of such aquatic systems. His special areas of interest are: fisheries and aquaculture, seafood value chains, trade-off analysis and structured decision making, wellbeing, marine governance, marine policy, blue justice.
