Maaike Knol-Kauffman is a marine social scientist with an MSc degree in international development studies (2007) and a PhD in social sciences (2011). She has been employed at NIVA since 2024 and has previously worked as a researcher at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Maaike has experience with (interdisciplinary) project design and implementation, scientific writing and editorial work, outreach, teaching and supervision at Master and PhD level, as well as with the organization of workshops and conferences. She works with marine and coastal governance in the light of climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss and conflicts with other sectors. Among others, she has expertise about the regulation of offshore renewable energy, offshore oil and gas activities, and maritime activities in Arctic waters. Much of her work focuses on how (scientific) knowledge is used in policymaking and on the (changing) relationship between science, policy, industry and society. Geographically, most of her work focuses on Europe, Norway and the Arctic.
