Profile

Kasper Hancke is a senior researcher at NIVA in the section for Marine Biology (since May 2016), educated as a Biological Oceanographer (PhD, NTNU, 2007) and in microbiology (MSc, KU, 2002). He has worked at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), and Aarhus University (AU).

His core expertise is on the role of micro- and macroalgae in marine ecosystems, and the regulation, turnover and storage of carbon. Kasper's research is centered around 'blue carbon' and how seaweed, kelp and microalgae affect marine life, and how these organisms can contribute to various climate solutions. Kasper has led and co-led a number of national and international research projects, linking field observations, laboratory experiments and model simulations to understand how marine ecosystems are affected by climatic and anthropogenic impacts. With funding from Horizon Europe, the Research Council of Norway (RCN), the Norwegian Environment Agency, the Danish Research Fund etc.

Kasper is the coordinator of the National Infrastructure for Drone-based Research, Mapping and Monitoring in the coastal zone, SeaBee (2020-2025, www.seabee.no, funded by the RCN), and NIVA's investment in the development of drone technology for environmental monitoring. He is central to NIVA's research on blue carbon and turnover in the coastal zone, and to NIVAs research on cultivation of macroalgae as a measure for climate mitigation and potential ecosystem impacts.
