Profile
Froukje is a lawyer with a background in EU and public international law. She is specialized in environmental and marine law and governance, and matters of coherence and coordination in public administration. She has been employed at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research since 2015. She has experience with applying for, managing and leading different types of research projects; publishing books and peer-reviewed papers; teaching bachelor and master courses, supervising students in the process of dissertation writing; and organizing events, workshops, and conferences. Her latest books include ‘The Environmental Rule of Law for Oceans – Designing Legal Solutions’ (Cambridge University Press 2023) and ‘Environmental Law and the Ecosystem Approach – Maintaining Ecological Integrity through Consistency in Law’ (Routledge 2016). She has currently published over twenty book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, and also contributed to many scientific reports. She works on a variety of research projects predominantly related to environmental law and governance in Norway, Europe, and the Arctic. Key research interest is the legal analysis of laws and policies to identify gaps, overlaps and/or inconsistencies and to suggest the changes necessary to improve the effectiveness, harmonization and coherence of legal frameworks, at the international, EU, and national level alike for a better protection of the environment. She currently coordinates the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation project ‘CrossGov’, which studies the coherence of European law and governance, and their implementation in a number of European countries for delivering the EU Green Deal for European seas.
